The three material families differ, among other things, in terms of flexibility, stability, temperature resistance, transparency, and texture. The required barrier properties and processing on the packaging machine also play an important role in material selection.
Mono-PE is particularly suitable when flexible and durable packaging is required. Depending on the specific formulation, the barrier properties can be tailored to the product being packaged. The material is suitable for various flexible packaging formats, such as Doypacks, stand-up pouches, flat pouches, or flow packs. The required film structure depends, among other factors, on the product being packaged, the desired shelf life, the barrier requirements, and the packaging process.
Mono-PP offers good mechanical stability and is also suitable for applications where temperature resistance and defined sealing properties play an important role. In addition to its functional properties, PP offers various options for surface design. This makes the material suitable, for example, for Doypacks and high-quality retail packaging, where appearance and feel are just as crucial as product protection.
A special variant is Mono-PP with Paper Touch: It combines the functional properties of PP with a natural, paper-like surface.
Mono-PET is particularly appealing when high transparency and dimensional stability are required. The material provides a clear view of the product, thereby enhancing the quality of the product presentation. This makes Mono-PET especially suitable for display-oriented product packaging, where the contents themselves are intended to be part of the product presentation and a sturdy, high-quality appearance is desired.
Packaging must do more than just be functional. Especially at the point of sale, the look and feel of a product influence how it—and the brand—are perceived.
This is where Mono-PP with Paper Touch offers an interesting option. The matte surface creates a natural, paper-like look and feel, giving the packaging a high-quality, natural appearance and texture. At the same time, the material composition remains within the PP material family.
This makes Paper Touch particularly suitable for brands that want to combine a natural product presentation with the functional properties of Mono-PP packaging. This solution is particularly appealing for food products, dietary supplements, pet food, and natural products, for example.
Various design options are also available. Depending on the application, for example, Doypacks and stand-up pouches can be produced with zippers, see-through windows, or other design features. The material structure, barrier properties, and sealing characteristics are selected to suit the product and the subsequent packaging process.
The choice of the appropriate monomaterial always depends on the specific requirements of the product being packaged.
For food and pet food, for example, barrier properties, product protection, shelf life, and secure sealing properties can be critical. For dietary supplements and natural products, appearance and feel often play an important role as well—in these cases, Mono-PP Paper Touch, for example, may be a good option.
For cosmetics and non-food products, on the other hand, requirements such as stability, transparency, product protection, or a particularly high-quality presentation may take center stage.
Therefore, it is not possible to make a blanket statement that PE, PP, or PET is generally the better monomaterial. The right solution depends on the product, packaging form, barrier requirements, desired appearance, and processing.
