Making First Opening Visible: How to Design Tamper-Evident Shrink Sleeves

How shrink sleeves, closures and packaging machinery work together to create a reliable packaging solution

A tamper-evident shrink sleeve is designed to help consumers recognize whether a bottle, jar or other container may have already been opened. However, achieving this function reliably requires more than simply placing a heat-shrinkable film sleeve over the closure.

Closure geometry, sleeve length, film material, perforation and the shrinking process must all be carefully coordinated. As part of the Home of Packaging, tbs-pack GmbH and alpha-pack GmbH combine their expertise: tbs-pack GmbH develops clear and custom-printed shrink sleeves, while alpha-pack GmbH provides suitable sleeve application and shrinking equipment.

The result is a complete packaging solution in which the tamper-evident shrink sleeve, container and machinery are considered together and can be tested under realistic production conditions.

What Should a Tamper-Evident Shrink Sleeve Show When First Opened?

A tamper-evident shrink sleeve covers the transition between the closure and the container. When the packaging is opened for the first time, the sleeve must show a visible change, tear or require removal beforehand.

How this visible evidence of first opening is achieved depends on the packaging design. For a bottle with a screw cap, the sleeve can extend over the cap and part of the bottle neck. For a jar, it may cover the transition between the screw-on lid and the jar body.

The key factor is not simply how tightly the shrink sleeve fits. Its position must ensure that opening the container causes a recognizable change to the material. A tamper-evident shrink sleeve is therefore not a universal standard solution but must be designed for the specific combination of container and closure.

An important distinction must also be made: A shrink sleeve can provide visible evidence of possible opening or interference. However, it does not make the packaging completely tamper-proof.

Clear or Custom-Printed: Which Tamper-Evident Shrink Sleeve Is Right for Your Product?

A clear tamper-evident shrink sleeve keeps the existing packaging design visible while remaining visually discreet. This can be particularly useful when the product label, cap color or product itself already provides sufficient brand recognition.

A custom-printed shrink sleeve can also feature opening instructions such as "Tear here to open", a company logo or other branding elements. A distinctive design can also help consumers distinguish the intended closure seal from a plain, easily replaceable film sleeve.

For printed tamper-evident shrink sleeves, artwork and text positioning must be adapted to the film's deformation during shrinking before production begins. Areas with high shrinkage can distort printed graphics. Longitudinal seams, perforations and transitions must therefore be carefully positioned to avoid interfering with logos or mandatory product information.

How Are Tamper-Evident Shrink Sleeves Applied Automatically?

In an automated packaging line, a sleeve labeling machine handles sleeve feeding, cutting and positioning. The container then passes through a shrink tunnel.

Depending on the container, shrink sleeve material and required result, the shrinking process can use hot air or steam. Steam can provide uniform heat distribution and may offer advantages for more complex container contours. Hot air can be suitable for less complex shapes and production environments where steam is not preferred.

The most suitable technology cannot be determined by the film material alone. Container geometry, heat sensitivity, required shrinkage, production line speed and existing infrastructure must also be considered.

alpha-pack GmbH offers both hot air sleeve shrink tunnels and steam shrink tunnels for different packaging requirements.
